CPCB opens new account to collect one pc environment cess

New Delhi, Aug 18 (PTI) The Central Pollution ControlBoard (CPCB) has opened a new account to collect one per centenvironment cess from dealers selling diesel cars with enginecapacity of 2000 CC and above in Delhi-NCR region following adirective from Supreme Court. "Supreme Court has directed all manufacturers and dealersof Delhi-NCR, selling diesel cars with engine capacity of 2000cc and above to pay one per cent Environment Protection Charge(one per cent of Ex-Showroom price of the vehicle). "CPCB has been directed by Supreme Court to open aseparate account for this purpose in a scheduled Public SectorBank. Therefore, CPCB has opened an account for this purposein Union Bank of India," an Environment Ministry statementsaid. It said that the apex court’s instructions came in thematter of M C Mehta vs UOI on Environment Protection Charge. Mercedes-Benz, Toyota and other makers of high-end carsand SUVs on August 12 got a major relief from the SupremeCourt which lifted its order banning registrationof luxurious vehicles having engine capacity of 2000 cc andabove in Delhi and NCR on payment of one per cent of theex-showroom price of such automobiles as green cess. While modifying its December 16, 2015 order banningregistration of such vehicles in the national capital whichwas extended to NCR by its March 31, 2016 order, a benchheaded by Chief Justice T S Thakur said the one per centamount, charged as EPC, shall be paid to Central PollutionControl Board (CPCB) which will open a separate account with ascheduled public sector bank.
