Festival of select documentaries from South Asia

New Delhi, Aug 17 (PTI) A festival of 10 non fiction filmsfrom South Asian countries made in the last two years,encapsulating the flavour of the Subcontinent begins heretoday. Films from Burma, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lankaare included in the four-day ‘Travelling Film SouthAsia 2016’organised in collaboration with The Southasian Trust,Kathmandu, at the India International Centre. The event concludes on August 20. "The festival includes the award winners of Film SouthAsia Festival 2015, Kathmandu as well as other films selectedto showcase the variety, treatment and intensity that marksthe world of Southasian documentary and non-fiction,"organisers said. Kicking off the festival is ‘News from Jaffna’ from SriLanka a 28 minute documentary directed by Kannan Arunasalam,and tells the story of a young reporter dares to cover pressfreedom in one of the world’s most dangerous places forjournalists. ‘The Journey Within’ (Pakistan) directed by Mian AdnanAhmad showcases the inspirational journey of a music show tohelp reclaim the rich and vast musical heritage of Pakistanpost 9/11, that brings together unique talents of variouscultural backgrounds and genres including but not limited tofolk, sufi, rock, pop and rap music. The second day, on August 18, begins with a screening of’Tyres’ from Burma. Directed by Kyaw Myo Lwin, the 30 minutesobservational documentary, screened entirely in black andwhite has been a recipient of the Kathmandu Post Award forStudent Film Film, South Asia Festival, Kathmandu 2015; BestStudent Film and Best Student Cinematography Award at PalmSprings International Short Film Festival. The third day sees a screening of ‘Drawing the Tiger’ fromNepal directed by Ramyata Limbu, Amy Benson and Scott Squire. The film recieved the UNICEF Award for Best Film onChildrenÂ’s Issues at the Film Southasia Festival, Kathmandu2015. Filmed over seven years, the documentary is an intimateportrait of a family in Nepal who get a chance to break theircycle of poverty. Their brightest child is awarded ascholarship to attend school in the city. When she doesn’treturn home, the family is forced to survive without her andthe opportunity they believed would change their fate. Accesex from India and directed by Shweta Ghosh exploresnotions of beauty, the ‘ideal body’ and sexuality through fourstorytellers; four women who happen to be persons withdisability. MORE PTIANS
