JLR brings Discovery Sport to India at Rs 46 lakh

Tata Motors-owned British luxury brand Land Rover on Wednesday launched the Discovery Sport in India at Rs 46.1 lakh (ex showroom, pre-octroi, Mumbai), almost a year after its global unveil.

The premium off-roader is the fifth model launched by Land Rover in India alongside four models already on sale from its sister brand Jaguar. The vehicle will be assembled in India at JLR’s factory in Chakan near Pune.

Packed with a host of new equipment inside out and new technologies, Jaguar Land Rover is playing to catch-up with German rivals Mercedes Benz, BMW and Audi.

Land Rover’s last launch in India was a year ago when it launched the Freelander 2 Sterling Edition in September last year. The Discovery Sport replaces the Freelander.

The Discovery Sport SUV will be offered in four trims – S, SE, HSE and HSE Luxury in both 5-seater and 7-seater configuration. The SUV will come with a 2.2 litre diesel engine generating peak power of 147 HP. The top-end version will come with 187 HP engine. A nine-speed transmission with automatic gearbox comes standard across all variants.

The four cylinder engine can push the vehicle to clock its top speed of 180kmph for the base variant and 188 kmph for the top-end version. The base variant will give mileage of 12.83kmpl while the top-end promises to deliver a mileage of 12.97kmpl. Apart from a ground clearance of 212mm the Discover Sport was a water wading depth of 600mm.

While other luxury car manufacturers like Audi, Mercedes and BMW launch models in Indian within six months of launching them globally it has taken more than a year for Land Rover to bring the Discovery Sport to India.
