Sweden's newest prince to be named Nicolas: palace

Date:

Sweden’s newest royal, born earlier this week to Princess Madeleine and sixth in line to the throne, will be named Prince Nicolas Paul Gustaf, the palace announced on Wednesday.

Born on Monday in Stockholm, he will also hold the title of Duke of Angermanland.

The prince is the second child for Madeleine and her husband, British-American businessman Christopher O’Neill, who married in 2013.

The couple are already parents to daughter Leonore, born in February 2014 in New York where the couple were living at the time.

Royals watchers said they were surprised by the choice of Nicolas as the first name since it is not a common royal name in Sweden.

The child’s middle names meanwhile honoured his two grandfathers: O’Neill’s late father Paul, and Madeleine’s father, Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf.

Madeleine and her family are expected to move to London in a few months.
