LS Speaker releases book on Parliamentary Standing Committees In India

The Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Sumitra Mahajan, released a book titled, ‘Parliamentary Standing Committees in India – Role and Relevance’ authored by Dr. Shimla,  Director, Lok Sabha.

The book is a research based work on the contribution of Parliamentary Committees in securing Governmental accountability, legislative process and policy formulation. Their relevance and role has been validated with the help of available data.

Being a unique effort, it will not only help the policy makers in formulating policies,  but will also act as a leading light to future researchers as it has opened unexplored path that has immense research potential on it.    

Speaking on the occasion, Sumitra Mahajan lauded the tireless efforts put in by Dr. Shimla, who juggled between her assigned office duties and found time to complete her research leading to this praiseworthy publication.

Mahajan also pointed out that this publication is a first-ever attempt to look into the concrete work done by the Parliamentary Committees from a research angle.         

Dr. Subhash C. Kashyap, noted Constitutional Expert, who was conferred with Padma Bhushan for his illustrious contributions as Secretary General of the Lok Sabha, has written the foreword for the book.  

While speaking on the occasion, Dr. Kashyap commended the groundbreaking contributions made by Dr. Shimla in bringing out the research publication and expressed hope that the work will be of immense help to policy makers.

Other dignitaries present on the occasion included, Dr. Satyapal Singh, Member, Lok Sabha; Shri Raghunandan Sharma, Honorary Advisor to Bureau of Parliamentary Studies and Training (BPST) and a noted literary critic and Parliamentarian; ShriAnoop Mishra, Secretary General, Lok Sabha; Dr D. Bhalla, Secretary, Lok Sabha; Prof. Ved Prakash, Chairman, UGC; Shri Sunil Tated, Principal Secretary to Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha; Prof. Kumar Suresh, NUEPA; and other senior Officers of the Lok Sabha Secretariat.

The author through the work has made an attempt to evaluate the work done by Parliamentary Committees with regard to each of their functions.
