Farmers suicide rocks both houses of Parliament

New Delhi: The Parliament on Thursday was mired by massive uproar on the issue of the suicide of a farmer Gajendar Singh in full public view at Aam Aadmi Party-led Kisan Rally in the national capital on Wednesday at Jantar Mantar.

Members of Opposition on Thursday created ruckus in the both houses of parliament demanding a debate and statement from the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the suicide of farmer.

Both the houses of the parliament witnessed adjournment following Opposition’s uproar over farmer’s death.

Speaking in the lower house, Congress MP Deepender Hooda demanded for PM’s statement in the house on what the government’s plan of action.

Attacking the government Hooda said, “We want that government to declare adequate compensation for crop loss.”

Taking a jibe at PM Modi, CPI MP, MB Rajesh said, “This isn’t suicide, this is homicide. I request PM Modi to come out of Twitter and see the ground reality.”

Meanwhile Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy attacked AAP and said, “It’s unfortunate that the AAP held the rally and leaders continued their speeches. We should order a judicial probe into why no one acted.”

AAP’s MP from Punjab, Bhagwant Mann took swipe at PM’s ‘mann ki baat’, and said it’s not enough.

“A long-standing solution needs to be figured out for farmers’ problem,” Mann said.

Speaking in LS, Samajwadi Party Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav suggested Modi government to make farmers independent.

Meanwhile, in Rajya Sabha, BSP Supremo Mayawati attacked Modi government and said, “Modi government should look at waiving farm loans.

Mayawati also demanded for a CBI probe to know if the farmer was provoked to end his life.

Attacking Kejriwal and Modi government Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad in Rajya Sabha said, “Delhi and central governments are responsible for farmer suicide.”

Amidst uproar and ruckus in the Lok Sabha over farmer suicide, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a statement in the house. Addressing the members of lower house Modi said, “Because of yesterday’s incident, the grief in country has been expressed here, I also share this grief.”

He further added, “We should work together to find solution to the farmer suicide. It (farmers’ plight) is an old, deep-rooted problem. Government will accept all suggestions. Nothing is more valuable than human life.”

Stating that there is nothing more important than the life of a farmer, Modi added, “Please give me suggestions, I will take it into account. Will not betray interests of farmers. We need to work together and therefore I welcome any suggestion.”

Just before the PM’s statement Home Minister Rajnath Singh also made statement in Parliament.

Speaking in the Parliament, Rajnath Singh said, “I offer my condolences to Gajendra Singh’s family, also from Prime Minister and government. This matter shouldnt be politicised.”

He further added, “This matter has been asked to be investigated by Crime Branch and have asked police to investigate it in a time-bound manner.”

He further said, “We need to figure out what the cause of this is, that more than 60% population still relies on food security.”

“No government will say it is anti-farmer. All governments will claim to be pro-farmers,” Rajnath added.
