India Art Fair paints the town

Date:

New Delhi: The seventh edition of the India Art Fair is underway in New Delhi. 85 galleries have showcased the breadth of modern and contemporary art practices including painting, sculpture, new media, installation and performance art.

The festival has quite a few unique exhibits. Chitra Ganesh and Dhruvi Acharya are creating a collaborative installation which will unfold in stages over the four days of the festival.

There are a few new additions to its usual line up of events, the major ones being the speaker’s forum and workshops with India Art Archives. The speakers will include Adam Szymczyk, Artistic Director of Documenta, the world’s most prestigious contemporary art exhibitions and Dr. Venu Vasudevan, Director General of the National Museum, New Delhi.

The event is the first of its kind in Delhi, and has created an indelible mark in the minds of the people.

“It’s like an art explosion in Delhi! Art exhibitions and fairs have become extremely popular globally, and it is great that Delhi is catching up. It is a great platform for art enthusiasts to network and get to know about others’ work. The most striking feature here are the installations, and the curated walks, because they help raise a lot of awareness”, Rashika Sood from The Yellow Sparrow, a youth-run network of artists, said.

The festival has its fair share of international artists exhibiting their work. Nazia Andaleeb Preema, an acclaimed visual artist from Bangladesh shares her experience of India, “My country has a lot to learn from India in terms of creating economic opportunities. The art fair is a great medium to bring the two nations closer to one another culturally. I’ve had the chance to witness some great work here, and I’m thankful for the opportunity.”

The art fair is being held in the NSIC Exhibition grounds, Okhla, and will be open to the public from 11 AM to 7 PM tomorrow.
