J&K Gov informed of BJP-PDP talks over govt formation

Date:

Jammu: More than a month after Jammu and Kashmir Assembly election results were declared, a breakthrough is likely in the government formation in the state. Senior BJP leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Ram Madhav, Jugal Jishore and Nirmal Singh are among those who met Governor NN Vohra on Wednesday.

The meeting comes even as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and BJP seem to be inching closer towards government formation in the state. Both parties decided to contest for two seats each of the four Rajya Sabha vacancies going to polls

“A seat sharing arrangement (between BJP and PDP) is there. If everything goes well, this will create level of comfort between the two parties,” said PDP spokesperson Naeem Akhtar on the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha.

Former chief minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah hit out at the two parties. He said if the two parties have announced an arrangement for the Rajya Sabha polls, they must do it for the state too.

“NC and Congress have decided to combine forces to file a joint candidate for RS polls in J&K to snatch a seat from the “unholy alliance,” he tweeted.

PDP is the single largest party with 28 seats, BJP is second with 25 seats, National Conference has 15, Congress 12 while seven seats have been won by Independent and smaller parties.

J&K has been without a government for over a month now. Jammu and Kashmir Assembly election results were declared on December 23, 2014 throwing up a badly fractured mandate. PDP emerged as the single largest party with 28 seats, BJP was second with 25 seats.
