Dutt’s application for furlough extension gets rejected

Date:

New Delhi: Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt will now have to pack his bags and get back to Pune’s Yerwada Jail once again. The actor’s application seeking an extension in his 14-day long furlough was rejected on Saturday.

This comes after Dutt flew to Pune on Thursday, spending a few hours in the vicinity of the Yerawada Central Jail, but failing to surrender despite the end of his 14-day furlough.

Before leaving for Pune Thursday, Dutt told media persons that his application for extension of furlough was still under process.

The Maharashtra government had ordered a probe into the repeated leaves granted to the actor. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had said the government would neither favour anyone nor be discriminatory.

Dutt has been out on parole, on several occasions ever since he was convicted in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case by the Supreme Court. In December last year, when his wife Manyata Dutt was ill, he was granted a month-long break to take care of his two kids that got further extended.

He also got a 30 day furlough on grounds of his own bad health in October last year.

Dutt’s latest furlough saw him attending a special show of the latest Aamir Khan megahit, “PK”, and celeb parties, while exhibiting his new set of eight abs built up in prison.

In February last year, the Bombay High Court had commented on the diligence in granting the actor’s requests for furlough which was not visible in case of other convicts who applied for leave.

Dutt was convicted in 2007 for illegal possession of an AK-56 assault rifle during the 1992-1993 Mumbai communal conflagrations before the March 12, 1993 serial bomb blasts in the city and sentenced to six years jail.

The Supreme Court had upheld the conviction in 2013 but reduced the sentence to five years, less time already served. Dutt surrendered on May 16, 2013, and was moved to the high-security jail in Pune to serve the remainder of his 42-month sentence.
