Ragging case: Arrested staffers out on bail

Date:

Gwalior:  Two members of the staff at the famous Scindia School in Gwalior who were arrested by the police in connection with the alleged ragging of a 14-year-old student have now been released on bail. The staff members were detained for questing on Tuesday over their alleged negligence in preventing the harassment of the student.

Earlier, three seniors of the student, a Bihar minister’s son, were expelled. In a statement, the school described the expulsion as “in line with its zero tolerance policy towards indiscipline.” Later, the three were arrested and then granted bail.

The 14-year-old was found unconscious in his room at the school on August 20 and was rushed to a local hospital before being taken to Delhi, accompanied by two school teachers. Since he was in critical condition, he was kept at the ICU. However, his family said his condition is improving. “He has shown some movement as well,” said a relative.

“After recording the statements of the three senior boys belonging to influential families, we found out that the teen attempted suicide as the trio used to harass him by asking him to do menial jobs,” said Mohammad Yusuf Qureshi, a senior police officer handling the case. He said the senior students also beat up the boy.

The Bihar minister has refuted allegations that the teen tried to commit suicide; he claims that the child was strangled by seniors who had been harassing him for weeks. But the police say they have recovered a bed sheet and a ceiling fan that the teen tried to use in his alleged attempted suicide.
