Bangalore rocked by parents’ protest

Date:

Bangalore: Angry parents are demanding answers from Chief Minister Siddaramiah, who was caught napping in the state assembly during the debate on the rape of the 6-year-old schoolgirl.

The parents have laid siege on the school premises for the third day running, demanding action against the two staff members guilty of the offence.  The parents sought the arrest of the accused, but police have only detained the two for interrogation, and the school remained shut since Thursday.

Anger is growing against many schools in Bangalore that have declared that they can’t be held responsible for the safety of students. They have asked parents to sign a form that the school’s staff or teachers can’t be held responsible for “damage to loss of property, sickness or injury from ‘whatever source’ legal entanglements, loss of life or money.”

Meanwhile, the Union Education Ministry has said it will take up the matter with the state. State Home Minister K J George said, the accused would be arrested, as the police have conclusive leads in the case. After an hour-long meeting with top police officials in the presence of the Chief Minister, George added: “We will soon set up fast-track courts across the state to try all rape cases expeditiously to convict and punish the guilty. We will also increase the number of women police force and provide additional vehicles to step up patrolling during beats”.

On Friday, hundreds of Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists joined the parents and sought action against the management for failing to provide safety to students.
