Ansals conviction in Uphaar case upheld

Date:

New Delhi: Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld conviction of Gopal and Sushil Ansal in 1997 Uphaar fire tragedy case. A two-judge Bench has differed on the quantum of punishment for Ansals.

The issue on quantum of punishment has been referred to a three-judge Bench in view of the difference in opinion between the two judges.

The Supreme Court observed the Ansals were more concerned about making money than ensuring safety of cinema goers. “A contemptuous disregard to law by owners of Uphaar cinema hall led to loss of lives,” it said.
