IPL becomes Indian problem league

Date:

IPL seems to be in the news for all the wrong reasons – every other major crime in the country seems to get connected with the cash-rich league.

Robber robbed?
In what could well turn out to be a classic case of crime against the criminal, touted as one of the biggest robberies in Delhi, Rajesh Kalra, a bookie, was robbed off cash worth Rs 15-20 crore. If this crime doesn’t seem odd, here’s more to chew on. If police sources are to be believed, this could have been part of IPL betting scam.

Robberies and hacking now seem to be hand-in-glove with IPL. Rajesh Kalra, the bookie who was robbed, seems to have gotten on the wrong side of his bookie counterparts, as they believed that he had been divulging vital leads to the police. This, in turn, seems to have prompted the irked bookies to rob him off cash that they needed to clear dues with and also to teach Kalra a lesson.

Hi Tech Fixing
Not a long time back, India played host to one of the biggest global hacking scams. A probe by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and CBI nailed one Amit Vikram Tiwari in Pune and if initial investigations are to be believed, Tiwari had been hired by people allegedly associated with IPL, seeking account details of some influential big guns.

Although there have been no breaking leads thus far in the case till now, yet, an IPL link doesn’t look like remotely impossible here.

Cricket league, or controversy league?
Since its inaugural edition, IPL has accomplished the feat of stirring a storm. Be it spot fixing, slap-gate, money laundering, illegal betting, tempers, or tantrums – IPL could give any Bollywood potboiler a run for its money. The big names have bowed down, the smaller ones have managed to ruffle a few feathers. However, now the perils of the league are threatening other sectors seriously. Is it high time that the league got scrapped altogether?  Maybe.
