Asian Wrestling Championships 2019: Bajrang Punia wins 1st gold medal for India

Presently ranking number 1 in the world, Bajrang Punia won India’s first gold medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships 2019 in Xi’an, China on Tuesday.

In the 65 kg weight category, Bajrang and beat Sayatbek Okassov of Kazakhstan 12-7 to bag the top spot and grab the gold medal. Bajrang had a brilliant fight in the final and a resounding victory fighting back from a huge deficit.

Bajrang was trailing 2-5 against Okassov, at the end of the first period but quickly made up and fought back to win the match.

In the women’s event, India’s top wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, Pooja Dhanda and Divya Kakran are also in contention and favourites to win.
