Massive 7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Hits US’ Alaska; Tsunami Warning Issued

Alaska: The Alaska Peninsula region was hit by a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake on Sunday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Following the earthquake, a tsunami warning was promptly issued for specific areas within the US state, heightening concerns about potential coastal impacts.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km, indicating a significant seismic event in the area.

The National Centre of Seismology (NCS) also confirmed the earthquake via Twitter, providing details about the epicentre. The seismic event was recorded at latitude 54.59 and longitude -161.05, pinpointing the exact location of the earthquake.

No immediate casualties or material damage were reported.

Alaska experienced its strongest ever recorded earthquake in March 1964, measuring 9.2 magnitude. The quake devastated Anchorage and generated a destructive tsunami that affected the Gulf of Alaska, the US west coast, and Hawaii. Tragically, more than 250 lives were lost. Alaska sits within the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire.
