Police Fire Tear Gas Shells On Protesting Farmers Ahead Of Haryana Chief Minister’s Visit

Date:

Police fire tear gas shells on farmers protesting at the toll plaza near Karnal in Haryana on Sunday, hours before Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s visit to a nearby village. As farmers were trying to enter the Kaimla village, Police fired tear gas shells and water canons.

The farmers were protesting against Khattar’s move to talk to farmers about the benefits of the 3 Farm laws passed by the Centre which farmers in North India have been protesting against for several weeks. While the biggest protest is at Singhu border in Delhi, farmers are also protesting in other parts of North India.

Ahead of the meeting, there is heavy Police presence. There have been clashes between farmers and Police on various occasions across the country, which is why the BJP government at the Centre is embarking on an outreach programme to convince farmers of the benefits of the Farm laws.

While the states which have a BJP government are hoping it is easier to reach out to farmers, in states ruled by other parties, the BJP is finding it tough. But the BJP is still not giving up and hoping that eventually they reach a consensus even as protesting farmers demand repeal of the laws as the Centre indicates that there will be no rollback.
