Fact Check: Here’s the truth behind this viral picture depicting traffic volume during COVID-19 and Solar Eclipse

Date:

A picture collage of a road, taken at different times is being circulated online with a claim that one was taken during Coronavirus lockdown and the other during the Solar Eclipse that was witnessed on 21 June 2020.

The collage draws a contrast on how the fear of Coronavirus failed to keep people at home while the road was deserted during Solar Eclipse, probably due to religious beliefs.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post and found it to be misleading.

On putting the image through Reverse Image Search, we found the same picture in an article publish by Deccan Herald on March 22, 2020.

According to the image caption, the picture was taken in Bangalore during the day-long Janta Curfew that took place on March 22, 2020.

We found the same collage on the website of Getty Images. According to the description, the picture of traffic was taken on February 5, 2020.

The description reads: This combination of pictures shows vehicles moving slowly on a road in Bangalore on February 5, 2020 (top) and the same road (bottom) deserted during a one-day nationwide Janata (civil) curfew imposed as a preventive measure against the COVID-19 coronavirus on March 22, 2020. – Nearly one billion people around the world were confined to their homes on March 22, as the coronavirus death toll crossed 13,000 and factories were shut in worst-hit Italy after another single-day fatalities record.
