Delhi-NCR continues to grapple with surge in COVID-19 cases

Date:

Delhi witnessed its sharpest spike of 1,106 cases on Thursday, taking the total number of cases in the national capital to 17,386 cases, State Health Minister Satyendra Jain said on Friday.

The death toll in the city climbed to 398, while 7,846 have been recovered from the disease with 351 cured on Thursday. For the first time, Delhi breached the 1,000-mark on Wednesday with 1,024 cases.

Delhi has been reporting more than 500 cases every day for almost ten days now. Only once in the last week has its daily increase been less than 500.

Delhi’s rising cases seem to be having a spillover effect on the neighbouring cities -Gurugram, Noida and Ghaziabad. In the last few days, these neighbouring cities have also reported a spurt in new cases, resulting in the closure of the border with the capital.

Gurugram

As the millennial city reported a surge in the COVID cases, the Haryana government on Thursday completely sealed the border with Delhi, except those involved in essential services, which caused traffic congestion at the border on Friday morning.

Gurugram on Thursday reported its sharpest single-day spike of 68 cases, taking the total cases in Gurgaon to 405, according to a state health bulletin. Home Minister Anil Vij said on Thursday said Gurugram has reported 111 cases in the last one week.

Taking this into account, Gurgaon District Magistrate Amit Khatri declared 63 containment zones on Thursday.

Noida

The COVID-19 confirmed in Gautam Budh Nagar (Noida) district increased to 377 with reports of 11 new cases on Thursday. However, 10 patients, including eight employees of a private news channel, were discharged from two different hospitals in the district after being cured, health officials said.

As many as 262 people have been discharged from different hospitals, five patients have so far lost their lives. There are now only 110 active cases in the city.

Ghaziabad

With 15 cases being reported in the last 24 hours, Ghaziabad’s COVID-19 tally has now surged to 260. The city now has 203 actives cases, while 203 people have been cured so far.

In Ghaziabad too, the UP administration had sealed its border with Delhi this week, resulting in a massive traffic jam at the border between the two cities. The decision to seal the border came after the city witnessed a surge of 10 fresh cases of coronavirus in a single day.
