NCW seeks complete ban on TikTok for promoting crimes against women

Date:

The National Commission for Women (NCW) is seeking a complete ban on short video messaging application app ‘TikTok’ for its “objectionable” content that promotes crimes against women.

This Chinese mobile application has been accused of promoting crimes against women. Recently, two offensive videos have been brought to the notice of the NCW—one related to acid attack on a woman and another on rape.

NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma has said that she is of the strong opinion that TikTok should be totally banned because of the objectionable videos. She said she will be writing to the Centre on this.

A user named Faisal Siddiqui –with over 13 million followers– can be seen in a video, chucking acid on a woman who then can be seen with make up depicting an acid attack victim. This video went viral before being suspended by the company. Another offensive video glorified rape.

The National Digital Communication Policy of 2018 clearly seeks to make the internet a safe place and a place for empowerment of the citizens. It holds various social media intermediaries responsible for the acts of their users.

In 2019, the Madras High Court had banned TikTok. However, the Supreme Court had reversed the ban.

In recent times, law enforcement agencies have said that the video application has been used to spread communal disharmony in the country.

According to the National Crimes Record Bureau, a rape takes place in India every 15 minutes and crimes against women are on the rise.
