COVID-19: Top 10 global developments this Monday morning

The total number of confirmed cases has crossed 4 million across the world, while the global death toll has reached 282,709, according to Johns Hopkins University.

1. The United States recorded 776 coronavirus deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 79,526, according to the real-time tally by Johns Hopkins University.

2. China reported 17 new virus cases on Monday, its second consecutive double-digit increase.

3. Britain’s coronavirus lockdown will stay in place until at least June 1, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Sunday, as he unveiled cautious plans to lift restrictions imposed seven weeks ago.

4. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has unveiled the National Cabinet’s three-stage plan to reopen Australia, economically and recreationally, from the COVID-19 lockdown.

5. Spain reported its lowest daily death toll in two months, as it emerges from a strict lockdown. Officials said 143 people died over a 24-hour period, taking the total number of deaths to 26,621.

6. In South Korea, fears of a second wave have prompted renewed restrictions, after a series of new transmissions linked to Seoul’s nightlife district.

7. Italy has registered its lowest total of daily new COVID-19 cases since the start of the nationwide lockdown in early March. According to Health Ministry data, 802 coronavirus infections were confirmed in the 24-hour period ending Sunday evening.

8. Walt Disney Co reopened its Shanghai Disneyland park on Monday to a reduced number of visitors, ending a roughly three-month closure caused by the coronavirus outbreak.

9. New Zealand reported three new coronavirus cases on Monday, ahead of a decision on whether to ease restrictions further and allow more business and recreational activities to resume after weeks of disruptions.

10. The Japanese government will consider lifting the state of emergency on many of the 34 prefectures that are not among the hardest-hit by the coronavirus epidemic before the nationwide deadline of May 31, Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura said.
