COVID-19 | Top 10 global developments this Monday morning

Globally, the novel coronavirus cases have surged past 3.5 million, lockdown continues in many parts of the world, a round up of some of the coronavirus data that has been released on Monday.

Here are the top 10 developments in India this Monday morning-

1. The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus exceeds 3.5 million. More than 247,000 people have died while about 1.1 million have recovered.

2. US President Donald Trump has told TV network Fox News that he believes that there will be a coronavirus vaccine by the end of the year. He also said he would like to see schools and universities open in September.

3. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says there is “enormous evidence” that the virus originated in a lab in China, in a comment likely to add to tensions with Beijing over the outbreak.

4. Japan’s national broadcaster NHK is reporting that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is expected to extend the country’s state of emergency until the end of May.

About 15,000 people have been diagnosed with the virus in Japan and more than 500 have died.

5. New Zealand reported no new cases of the coronavirus on Monday, marking the first time the country recorded zero cases since its outbreak took hold in mid-March.

6. Australia, Malaysia and India are among countries in Asia that will begin to ease parts of their lockdown on Monday.

7. Malaysian businesses, including restaurants, have been told they can reopen from Monday providing they adhere to requirements on social distancing, hygiene and contract tracing.

8. Australia is beginning to ease coronavirus restrictions, but a Sydney schoolboy’s positive test for coronavirus has added to the debate about whether schools should reopen.
