COVID-19 | Over 58,000 dead in US as total cases cross 1 million mark

Date:

Many states in the US and nations around the world are beginning to prepare for the phased withdrawal of the lockdown imposed due to the deadly virus. States like Georgia and Texas are opening up their economies even as the number of total Covid-19 positive cases has crossed the one million mark in that country.

Florida has made plans to reopen its economy even as the US has reported around 2200 deaths in 24 hours.

The total number of cases in the US presently stands at 1,012,583 cases and the number of deaths has crossed 58,000. Comparisons are being made with the Vietnam war in which over 55,000 soldiers were killed. This virus has taken out a greater number of lives than a war.

US President Donald Trump continued to lash out at China and said that if the virus had been stopped at the source, 184 nations need not have suffered.

“It’s in 184 countries, as you hear me say often. It’s hard to believe. It’s inconceivable. It should have been stopped at the source, which was China,” Trump said.

A growing number of legislators have called for stricter punitive measures against China. They have also called on the Trump Administration to enhance their domestic manufacturing base and make available raw materials for critical sectors such as electronics, so as to cut down the dependence on China.

Meanwhile, in a rare sign of thaw in relations, the US and Russia have issued a joint statement calling for joint cooperation in the battle against COVID-19.

Nations around the world from Wednesday have decided to partially open up. These nations include Russia and Nigeria.
