Fact Check: Former CJI Ranjan Gogoi did not make this statement on Coronavirus!

A post attributed to former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi is making rounds on social media. The caption claims there there shouldn’t be any election for the next 10 years to cover the economic loss from the Coronavirus.

The caption of the post read: ‘कोरोना से हुए आर्थिक नुकसान को पूरा करने के लिए अगले १० वर्षो तक कोई चुनाव न हो | क्युकी चुनाव में बहुत खर्चा होता है और मोदी जी ही प्रधानमंत्री बने रहे, क्या राइ हैं आपकी”

Translation: There should be no election for the next 10 years to cover the economic loss from Corona. Because it costs a lot in elections and Modiji remains the Prime Minister. What is your opinion

Another Facebook page and a twitter user were also seen sharing the same post;

We simply took the relevant keywords–CJI Ranjan Gogoi, Coronavirus, PM Modi, and ran a Google search but couldn’t find any reliable news report online.

Moreover, the former CJI doesn’t have any social media presence and hence, all the information put together gives us a clear picture that the post is falsely attributed to former CJI Ranjan Gogoi.
