COVID-19: Amidst “Janta Curfew”, India lauds those providing essential services

Date:

Having spent 10 hours in a self-imposed people’s curfew—or the “Janata Curfew” as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called it—people from across India came out to express their appreciation for those working in providing essential services during the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic.

While the designated time to show this appreciation was 5 pm, people came out to their balconies or the entrances of their houses almost 5 to 10 minutes earlier in many places.

Some of them clapped, some rang bells, some even blew conch shells to say thanks to people—doctors, paramedical staff, other government personnel, and journalists—who are at the frontlines in the fight against Covid-19.

With the Janata Curfew already having led to a more than usual quieter day across the country, localities were suddenly abuzz with loud sounds resulting out of this expression of appreciation.
