Centre, AAP govt mute spectators: Sonia Gandhi after meeting President over Delhi violence

Congress top brass, including party interim president Sonia Gandhi, met President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday and sought normalcy and peace in violence-hit Delhi.

The Congress delegation, including Manmohan Singh, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ahmed Patel and Randeep Surjewala, also submitted a memorandum to the president.

Briefing to the media after submitting the memorandum to President, Sonia Gandhi said: “We call upon you (President) to ensure that life, liberty, & property of citizens are preserved. We also reiterate that you should immediately call for the removal of the Home Minister for his inability to contain violence.”

She also said that the central government and the Delhi government have been mute spectators to violence in the national capital over controversial citizenship law.

Besides, former PM and veteran party leader Manmohan Singh said the Delhi violence is a matter of national shame.

“We called upon President to suggest to him that what has happened in last 4 days in Delhi is a matter of great concern and a matter of national shame in which at least 34 people have died and 200 people are injured, it is a reflection on the total failure of the central government,” he said.

In the violence-hit Delhi, the death toll rose to 34 on Thursday.
