Delhi polls: EC bans BJP leaders Anurag Thakur from campaigning for 72 hrs, Parvesh Verma for 96 hrs

Date:

The Election Commission on Thursday banned Union Minister Anurag Thakur and BJP MP Parvesh Verma from campaigning for Delhi elections for 72 and 96 hours, respectively, days after the duo made controversial speeches in poll rallies.

The poll watchdog added that both the leaders will also remain off their party’s star campaigner list.

The ban on both the leaders come after they controversial comments during election rallies this week. Addressing a rally in Delhi’s Rithala, Thakur urged a crowd to “goli maaro (gun down traitors)”.

While Verma claimed those who have mounted a weeks-long peaceful sit-in protest at Shaheen Bagh against the citizenship law “will enter your houses, rape your sisters and daughters”.

Meanwhile, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) filed a complaint over an alleged hate speech made by Verma last week, in which he repeatedly called Kejriwal a “terrorist”. The AAP has also demanded an FIR be registered against Parvesh Verma.

Polling in all the 70 seats in the national capital will be held on February 8 and the results will be announced on February 11.
