Delhi polls: EC bans BJP’s Kapil Mishra from campaigning for 48 hrs over ‘Ind vs Pak’ tweet

Date:

The Election Commission on Saturday banned BJP candidate Kapil Mishra from campaigning for 48 hours starting 5 pm today for his ‘India vs Pak contest on February 8’ tweet.

On Friday, the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer asked Delhi Police to file a complaint against BJP’s Kapil Mishra for his tweet. The poll watch also asked Twitter to remove BJP leader’s tweet regarding Assembly elections.

In a series of tweets, Misha on January 23 had compared the Delhi election on February 8 to an “India vs Pakistan” clash. He had also referred to Shaheen Bagh – where hundreds of women and children have been protesting against the citizenship law – as an entry point for Pakistan.

Delhi Election Commission’s returning officer issued a show-cause notice to Mishra over his tweet and asked to file an explanation within a day. However, the BJP candidate from Model Town said that he does not think that he said anything wrong and stands by his statement.

“I received a notice from Election Commission last night. I will give my reply today. I don’t think I said anything wrong. Speaking truth is not a crime in this country. I spoke the truth. I stand by my statement,” Mishra was quoted by newswire ANI.

“Roads are encroached upon in Shaheen Bagh. People are not being allowed to go to schools, offices, hospitals, inciting slogans are being raised. The shamelessness with which Manish Sisodia said he stands with Shaheen Bagh means that this is a political movement,” he added.

Submitting a reply to the show-cause notice, Mishra stated that his comments have been taken out of context and misinterpreted intentionally to paint a one-sided picture to stoke differences.

“My statement must be seen in the context of Pakistan’s attempt at sending their proxies to take undue advantage of a prevailing law an order situation in Delhi. The protesters in Shaheen Bagh are neither in my constituency nor my voters hence my statement will have no impact on them,” he said.
