Anti CAA Protests: From Jamia to AMU, here are how the events unfolded

President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday gave his assent to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019, officially making it an Act.
This led to nationwide protests demanding the withdrawal of the Act. On Sunday protests near Jamia Millia Islamia turned violent. This is how the chain of events unfolded.

  • Protesters burned four buses and two police vehicles as students clashed with the police near Jamia Millia Islamia University on Sunday.
  • The Police spoke to locals and requested to maintain calm and traffic slowly started to resume around 10 pm
  • The police tried to handle the mob by using batons and teargas shells.

  • Later in the evening, people assembled outside the old Delhi Police Headquarters to protest against the police.
  • The protesters raised anti-police slogans outside the headquarters in the ITO area.
  • Deputy Commissioner of Police Chinmoy Biswal said that all the students who were detained were released around 4 am on Monday.
  • The midnight protests by students in front of Delhi Police Headquarters was also called off.
  • Jamia Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar said the University will be approaching the police to file an FIR regarding the violence.
  • Jamia Millia Islamia will be shut till January 5, 2020 and students have been asked to vacate the campus.
  • The Supreme Court has agreed to hear pleas on Tuesday which have alleged police atrocities on students holding protests against the amended Citizenship Act at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and Jamia Millia Islamia University.
  • Media personnel were also attacked today.
  • A Bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde on Monday took serious note of the rioting and destruction of public property during protests against the Act and said this must stop immediately.

Other universities also protested and came out to support Jamia students:

  • The students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) also protested which led to a ban on internet services to maintain law and order. It also led to the postponement of all semester examinations and suspension of all classes till January 5th.
  • TISS students gathered in front of Ambedkar Garden in Chembur, Mumbai to protest against police action on Jamia students.
  • Students from IIT-Madras also began protesting in solidarity with students in New Delhi.
  • Several Delhi University students boycotted exams and held protests to express solidarity with students of Jamia Millia and AMU.
  • The students of Nadwa college in Lucknow also came out in support of Jamia students.
  • Protests also erupted in Mulana Azad National Urdu University in Hyderabad in solidarity with Jamia students.
  • Indian Institute of Science (IISC) also protested in solidarity
