Today in Parliament, President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a special joint sitting of both the Houses on the 70th Constitution Day.

Here are the main highlights from the Parliament:
  • Addressing the Parliament, President Ram Nath Kovind said that rights and duties are two sides of the same coin. “Rights and duties are two sides of the same coin. Our Constitution provides the fundamental right to ‘freedom of speech and expression’ and it also enjoins upon citizens the duty to safeguard public property and to abjure violence,” he said.

  • President Kovind also inaugurated the exhibition on the history of the Constitution of India. Also, he launched commemoration stamp and LokSabha Calendar 2020 in Central Hall of Parliament on occasion of Constitution Day 2019.

  • “Today is a historic day, 70 years ago we had adopted the Constitution. But today is also 26/11. I pay my respects to the departed souls,” PM Modi

  • Transgender persons (protection of rights) bill 2019 passed in  Rajya Sabha.

 

  • Lok Sabha passes the National Institute of Design (amendment) bill, 2019.

  • The opposition parties led by Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi protested outside Parliament and had boycotted the special joint sitting in Parliament, in protest against what they are calling the “murder of democracy” in Maharashtra and the “manhandling” of women MPs by security staff in the Lok Sabha.

  • Former Prime Minister and Congress leader Dr Manmohan Singh on Opposition boycotting joint session of Parliament on Constitution day: It is not a disservice to the Constitution. It’s a reminder to everyone that the constitutional norms are being violated by the present establishment.
