State Department officials testify before US law makers on ‘J &K’ issue

Date:

The Asian sub-committee of the US House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Committee, in one of its sittings grilled the state department officials with respect to the issue of Jammu and Kashmir, the clamp down and restrictions there, issues related to the National Registry of Citizens in the state of Assam and the issue of religious intolerance in the nation.

State Department’s top South Asian Diplomat Alice Wells and its Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights, Robert Destro testified before the sub- committee.

While the meeting was supposed to discuss human rights violations in other parts of the Indian sub-continent, a clear anti-Indian attitude was on full display.

Sheila Jackson Lee, a member who was present at the ‘Howdy Modi’ rally, asked whether it was a humanitarian crisis? Mr Destro answered in the affirmative.

The members also called upon India to lift the restrictions on communication in the state. This has been done in the previous week when post paid connections were restored.

The members also questioned the officials on India’s National Registry of Citizens being implemented in the state of Assam and India’s record of intolerance.

It is clear that Pakistani state sponsored terrorism was ignored and the victims of terror were being judged for their crack down on terrorism
