SC allows Ghulam Nabi Azad to visit Srinagar; CJI says ‘will go to J&K if needed’

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on Monday said he will go to Jammu and Kashmir, if required, to check the veracity of allegations that people aren’t being able to access the J&K high court.

The apex court was hearing a plea by activist Enakshi Ganguly that alleged children and teenagers in Jammu and Kashmir have been going through hardships amid the partial restrictions after the centre scrapped special status from the state.

Besides this, the top court also asked the Central and Jammu and Kashmir government to file an affidavit on the petitions challenging the abrogation of the provisions under Article 370. The court has now slated hearing in the petition to September 30.

The court asked the Centre to restore the normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir by keeping in mind the “national safety” and “security”.

On the other hand, the court on Monday allowed senior Congress leader and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Gulam Nabi Azad to visit Srinagar, Baramulla, Anantnag and Jammu.

However, CJI Ranjan Gogoi said, “He will not make any speeches or hold any public rally as per his own submissions.”
