Uproar in Lok Sabha over Azam Khan’s sexist comment on Dy Speaker

Date:

New Delhi: Samajwadi Party MP Azam Khan courted controversy on Thursday in Lok Sabha when he made sexist remarks on Rama Devi, who was officiating the proceedings.

While debating on the triple talaq bill in the lower house of Parliament, the SP leader told Rama Devi, “Aap mujhe itni acchi lagti hain ki mera mann karta hai ki aap ki aankhon mein aankhein dale rahoon.”

After his remarks, a ruckus ensued in the Lok Sabha following which the members of the House have demanded an apology from the MP. As Speaker Om Birla resumed the Chair, he rebuked Khan and asked him to immediately apologise. The Speaker also gave instructions to expunge the objectionable part.

BJP MP Rama Devi objected to Azam Khan’s remark saying that this was not the way to speak. “You are like my sister, ” Khan replied.

Defending Khan, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav said, “I don’t think Azam Khan ji meant any disrespect to the chair (Rama Devi). These (BJP MPs) people are so rude, who are they to raise fingers?”

Refusing to apologise, Azam Khan said he was ready to tender his resignation if he said anything that was unparliamentary. Azam Khan and Akhilesh Yadav later walked out of the Lok Sabha.
