Date:

New Delhi: Congress Lok Sabha MPs on Wednesday urged party chief Rahul Gandhi to continue on his post, even as he remained firm on stepping down from his post, sources said.

In a meeting chaired by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, the lawmakers pleaded that the party need Rahul, stating that there was no one else who can lead the Congress. However, he was determined to go ahead with his decision and asserted that he will step down from the post, sources added.

According to the sources, Congress leaders Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari told the Rahul that the party takes collective responsibility of the Congress’ drubbing in the recently held general elections adding that the party chief is not the one to be blamed.

Moreover, members of Youth Congress and workers of the party staged a demonstration outside Rahul’s residence on Wednesday urging him to retain the party’s top post.

Rahul had offered to resign from the post of party president on May 25 following Congress’ crushing defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Since then, he has been adamant to step down as party chief.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the grand old party won just 52 seats, while the ruling BJP stormed back to power with 303 seats.
