Three policemen in New Delhi get suspended for assaulting auto driver and minor son

Date:

Three policemen were suspended after they allegedly thrashed an auto driver, Sarabjeet Singh and his minor son. This happened after Singh’s vehicle brushed past an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) of the police on Sunday, June 16, 2019, in the Mukherjee Nagar area of North Delhi.

After the scheduled hearing on Wednesday,June 20, the court acted in favour of the victim, Sarabjeet and his minor son. The Bench called for an independent report regarding the incident from the Joint Commissioner of Police, a week before the hearing on July 2, 2019. On screening visual evidence of the assault, the court condemned the actions of the police and issued for further investigation on the perpetrators.

The Delhi High Court agreed on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 to hear a PIL (public interest litigation) after several men from the Sikh community protested against the accused policemen and demanded they be sacked from their positions.

The Policemen were accused of dragging Sarabjeet and his son out of their vehicle and harassing them for ‘no reason’.However, the police have accused him of chasing them with a sword and allegedly injuring one of the officers.

Videos of the assault went viral on social media, resulting in a small protest by a few members of the Sikh community outside the Mukherjee Nagar Police Station. Manjit Singh GK, former Delhi Prabandhak Committee president compared the attack  of the policemen on the Sikh community to the 1984 Sikh riots, demanding justice for his community and for  strict action to be taken against the perpetrators.

Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal has shown his support for the victim by tweeting about the incident early today morning, June 17, 2019.
