February 14 marks the 86th birth anniversary of ‘Anarkali’ Madhubala. Popularly known as ‘Marilyn Monroe of Bollywood’ and ‘Venus of Indian cinema’, Madhubala was the epitome of beauty.
Born as Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi on February 14, 1933, Madhubala had a short and tragic life. She died on February 23, 1969, at the age of 36 due to congenital heart disease, leaving behind memories and bruised and broken hearts.
She was a gifted actor known for her beauty, personality and sensitive portrayals of women in her films. In 1951, Hollywood’s Life magazine called her ‘the biggest star’ in the international industry!
Madhubala started her acting career at the age of 9, as Baby Mumtaz. She brought to life the character of ‘Anarkali’ and her performance in K. Asif’s ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ still remains one of the most iconic performances in the history of Indian cinema.

1. Mughal-e-Azam (1960)
The film broke all the previous box-office records to become the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time, a distinction it held for 15 years. Madhubala played the role of ‘Anarkali’, who falls in love with Prince Salim. It is said that she suffered abrasions on her skin and fainted during the filming of the movie due to its harsh demands and her delicate health.
