It was 3rd December of 1971 when the Bangladesh Liberation war just started. The then Navy Chief, Admiral SM Nanda chose to strike first and cut off naval supplies from Karachi harbor to East Pakistan (Bangladesh).
The operation was carried for 90 minutes, which resulted in the firing of six missiles by Indian Amry that destroyed four enemy vessels.
Operation Trident was a successful operation and saw the first use of anti-ship missiles in combat in the region. Since then to commemorate the day, December 4 is celebrated as the Indian Navy Day.
