Dalit colleague harassed, four IIT Kanpur professors held

Four professors from IIT Kanpur have been arrested on account of alleged harassment of a Dalit colleague in the aerospace department of the institute.

The four professors – Eshan Sharma, Sanjay Mital, Rajiv Shekhar, and C.S. Upadhyay have been held under the relevant sections of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and IPC Section 100 (defamation) and an FIR has been registered against them along with another unidentified person.

The victim, Subramanyam Saderla alleged that the accused professors spread rumours that Saderla benefitted from reservations and is not as competent as the other professors to answer questions. Subramanyam is also an alumnus from IIT Kanpur.

He also sent an e-mail to the director of the institute as well as the head of the aerospace engineering department, A.K. Ghosh to report his alleged harassment.

According to media reports, three of the accused professors are presently in IIT Kanpur, while Shekhar got transferred to IIT Dhanbad some months ago and he now heads that institute.
