Stephen Hawking’s thesis, wheelchair go under the hammer

Stephen Hawking’s motorized wheelchair sold for almost 300,000 pounds at Christie’s online auction on Thursday.

Hawking died in March, 2018 at the age of 76 after spending most of his life confined to a wheelchair due to motor-neuron disease ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).

Stephen Hawking’s thesis and wheelchair have been sold in an charity auction for over $1m.

The auction house Christie’s in London ran the nine-day online auction called ‘On the Shoulders of Giants’ – a reference to the famous phrase once used by Newton of his own achievements: ‘If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.’

Belongings including essays, medals, awards and a copy of his book a ‘Brief History of Time’ signed with a thumbprint were sold online on Thursday alongside letters and manuscripts belonging to Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein.

Hawking’s 117-page dissertation ‘Properties of expanding universes’ from 1965 sold for 584,750 pounds.

Medals and awards sold for 296,750 pounds, compared with an estimate of 15,000 pounds, while the red motorized wheelchair sold for 296,750 pounds, also compared with an estimate of 15,000 pounds.

The money raised by the sale of the wheelchair will go to the Stephen Hawking Foundation and the Motor Neuron Disease Association.
