This winter keep a tab on certain foods and be fit as a fiddle

Date:

Winter is knocking on our doors and the slight nip in the temperature is a testimony of this. Time for jackets and sweaters to make their way back to the closets and hot soups and cosy blankets to find their way into our houses.

Apart from the above, one thing that differentiates winters from summers is the excessive weight gain that most people end up putting on.
One of the prime reasons is less of outdoor activities as the weather prompts us to remain inside. The extra eating that eventually happens is inevitable. Craving for food goes up and invariably people end up eating more of fried food, high calorie stuff and more helpings per meal.

Here are some ways that can help you stay away from this weight gain. The only catch – follow them religiously. Too many cheat days may not work well for you.

Water and more water –
There is no denying that water is critical for weight loss. Drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water per day. It helps to clear away the excessive fat and also the toxins, apart from the fact that it keeps the tummy feeling full.

Curb the urge for fried stuff
Even though the weather demands piping hot fried food, stay away from it. Even packaged foods like chips are very harmful. Pick up a fruit instead or a glass of juice. Go for slow-releasing carbs such as whole-grains, sweet potatoes, beans, pulses and brown rice to avoid gaining weight in winters.
Beans and lentils are full of B-vitamins, iron and magnesium, which are all great for energy and are immune-boosting helpers during the winter months.

Healthy vegetable broths and soups are perfect for a winter dinner. Grilled chicken can also provide the needed proteins but in a healthy manner.

Don’t stop the workout
Yes, it is tough to be outdoors but that shouldn’t restrict you from following a regime. Climb steps to your apartment or office, go to the gym and walk when the Sun peeps out.
A good routine helps your body mechanism stay in check.

Stock up on vitamins and supplements
Supplementation can help prepare the body to fight off infections and the flu. Ask your doctor and start on some multivitamins which supplement Vitamin C and zinc. These help fight colds and other weather-related allergies. Low levels of Vitamin D also leads to increased fat storage, among many other health problems. So apart from sunshine, which is rare during winters, a supplement always helps.

Eat spicy food to fight colds
Spicing up your meals can help ward off the sniffs. Studies say that spices can have an antiviral effect that helps avoid symptoms of common cold such as sore throats and coughing. Ensure these are homemade. Spices like turmeric, cumin and chilli have immense therapeutic properties. Use the age-old grandma’s recipes for the perfect winter spell.

Apart from these, store nuts for the in between snack time. Works wonders and helps keep the tummy meaningfully full.

Stay healthy this winter!
