Delhi to get relief from honking with silence zones

Date:

Delhi Traffic Police has discovered 52 silence zones in Delhi where honking is not allowed apart from the already existing 103 such zones mostly near schools, hospitals, and at busy crossings. The work is going on with the environment department of the state government. On violating the rule, the traffic police will pose a fine of Rs. 100.

Some areas where the silent zones have been identified include Sri Aurobindo Marg crossing, AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital area, Lok Nayak Hospital on Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, Bhagwan Das Road from Mathura Road to Tilak Marg intersection, and Pusa Road intersection.

The Delhi Traffic Police has planned out a special awareness campaign around the no-honking areas apart from the fine. The silence zones also include libraries and residential neighbourhoods.

Between the months January to September this year, around 13,000 fines were accumulated from people travelling and honking in the silence zones that existed within that time. Since Monday, when the police conducted an awareness campaign, a set of about 800 fines have been collected.

According to the supports and initiaters of the campaign, unnecessary and continuous honking in the city not only leads to frustration in other commuters but also results in noise pollution and stringent laws need to be implemented to stop this.
