Viral picture from farmers’ protest is actually from 2013

Following the farmer’s protest at Delhi-UP border, a picture is making rounds on social media in which a security officer pointing a gun at a villager which said to be from the farmer’s protest which took place on Tuesday.

Activists Kavita Krishnan tweet the picture with a caption that read:

“Look at the farmer with a brick in his hand, facing a cop with a gun.
If you don’t think the farmer is a terrorist – and I hope you don’t – if you empathise with his anger, I hope you’ll think again before you call a Kashmiri kid with a stone in his hand a terrorist.”

At the time of filing of this report, the tweet had already got nearly 3,000 retweets.

Another Facebook page I am With Barkha Dutt with around 7.5 lakh followers shared the same picture and the text on it read: एक बुजुर्ग अनदाता पर सीधे बंदूक तान देना कहां की शूरवीरता है साहेब ! क्या ये किसान अपराधी हैं या आतंकवादी ? डूब मरो तानाशाहों.

FACT CHECK

When NewsMobile fact-checked the viral picture we found out that the picture is five years old from Khera in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh during a clash between police force and villagers post the Muzaffarnagar riots.

When we ran the picture through the Google Reverse Image Search, we came across an article by Indian Express which was dated September 30, 2013 and used the same picture which was taken by PTI.
