Global warming: Bangkok struggles to stay afloat as sea level rises

Date:

With a rise in earth’s temperature, a lot of the cities in the world like Venice, New Orleans, Louisiana are sinking. It seems like, Bangkok, the sprawling city of more than 10 million is joining the club.

Nearly 40 percent of Bangkok will partially submerge underwater by 2030 due to extreme rainfall and changes in weather patterns, according to a World Bank report.

The scientists and the officials in the city say that they do not know how long people will be able to continue living in the Thai capital. ‘The capital is sinking one to two centimetres a year and there is a risk of massive flooding in the near future,” said Tara Buakamsri of Greenpeace.

Bangkok made headlines in 2011 when it witnessed one of the worst floods in its history. About 815 people were killed and 13.6 million people affected.

Bangkok will turn 250 years old in 2032, but if the situation remains the same and no action is taken then the city could be under 5 ft of water by then.

A preparatory meeting for the next UN climate conference is set to begin on Tuesday in Thailand’s capital. rules regarding reducing greenhouse emissions and providing aid to vulnerable will be discussed.
