Live heart transported from Aurangabad to Mumbai in just 94 mins

Date:

Mumbai: The heart of a six-year-old brain-dead boy from Gondia gave a new lease of life to a four-year-old Pune girl.

Making impossible possible, a live heart was transported from Aurangabad to Mumbai, covering a distance of 323.5 kilometres, in one hour and thirty-four minutes, which was later successfully transplanted.

The four-year-old girl, named Dhanashree from Jalna, was suffering from the respiratory disorder as a result only 15% of her heart was functional.

Doctors at the Mulund’s Fortis Hospital recommended a heart transplant.

Now the difficulty was to find a heart and meet the cost of around 25 lakhs for the transplant which was later arranged from the Medical Assistance Fund of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The family of the six-year-old also agreed to donate his organs after he was declared brain-dead following an accident.

The recipient was a beneficiary from Western Coalfields Ltd, Ghugus, in Chandrapur district. Anand Sancheti, director of New Era Hospital in Nagpur said the donor was admitted for about 8 to10 days, however, he later succumbed to his head injury.

“Organ donation is very important. It takes a lot of courage to donate an organ of a person. It is important to increase its awareness so that a life can be saved,” said Dr. Narayani, Zonal Chairperson of Fortis Hospital.

Earlier on Sunday, a 60-year-old man who was declared dead by the Sri Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi was about to be buried when his family found him alive. The victim’s family had found him ‘sweating’ and informed the doctors who later confirmed that he was still alive.

The family has accused the doctors and blamed the hospital for medical negligence.
