Relief to fliers, no more cancellation fee

Date:

A fee will not be charged for flight tickets cancelled within 24 hours of booking, the government said in a move that will bring respite to the flyers.

“No cancellation charges will be levied if the tickets are cancelled within 24 hours of booking, provided the ticket is booked 96 hours before flight departure,” Jayant Sinha, Minister of State for Aviation said addressing media persons.

The government is also thinking of making it mandatory for domestic aviation companies to be more accountable to the passengers,  Jayant Sinha, minister of state for civil aviation, told media persons.

“If a flight is cancelled and it is the airlines’ fault, then the passenger has to be compensated or ticket has to be refunded. If a flight is delayed, the passenger will be compensated in various ways,” he added. The modalities will be announced soon.

However, the compensation will be made only when the delay or cancellation due to the airlines’ fault. It effectively rules out delays or cancellation due to weather or other external circumstances.

Currently, domestic cancellation charges according to the DGCA are Rs 3,000 or base fare added with fuel surcharge per ticket – whichever is be lower.

Passengers can optionally link their Aadhaar to airlines and other ecosystem players at the time of booking for faster airport entry and automated check-ins without requiring any paper-based interventions.
