No respite in SC/ST Act case as Dalits in Kerala hold protest

Thiruvananthapuram: It seems that there will not be any relief for the citizens as Dalit organizations in Kerala held a protest here on Monday morning against the dilution of SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The organizations staged the protest around Thampanoor railway station area and tried to block vehicles along the way. They demanded to restore the provisions which have been diluted by the top court.

The Supreme Court on March 20 had brought a provision of anticipatory bail in the SC/ST Act while stating that there will not be any direct arrest under this law. Consequently, Dalit organizations in the country help protest and called for Bharat Bandh earlier demanding the restoration of the provisions. The outrage claimed at least 11 lives.

Following this, the Centre filed a review petition in the Supreme Court on which the court denied to put a stay on its March 20 order. While protesting during the Bharat Bandh also, angry Dalits made their presence felt in Punjab, Odisha, UP, MP among others. They halted traffic, burned vehicles, forced shops to shut down and clashed with police also.

Members of Bhartiya Dalit Panthers Party, on Thursday, wrote a letter in blood to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of India against the dilution in the SC/ST Act.
