Electronic buses soon to be seen in Chennai

Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses commuting in Chennai roads may go green soon, with officials cconsidering the introduction of electric buses to replace some of its existing ones that run on diesel.

There are currently about 3,500 buses that run on diesel, and contribute to the pollution. The new buses, estimated costing around 2 crore each, offer noteworthy advantages over the diesel buses. These eco friendly busses will be powered by lithium ion batteries. Other features of the 31-seat bus are that it has zero emotions, lower noise pollution, it is powered by lithium ion batteries, automatic transition and on full charge, it can run for around 40 kilometres.

On Monday, the transport minister MR Vijayabaskar and transport secretary PWC Davidar looked at a model electric bus manufactured by Ashok Leyland at the Pallavan Salai MTC depot. They took a test ride on the bus and inspected it. According to MTC officials, the company has been given two months to develop a model which meets the requirements of Chennai.
