Is Apple planning a self-driving car?

Date:

Tech giant Apple has always been popular and considered the best for its products. In the race of self-driving cars, a newly accessed document has shown the company’s plan for it.

The Cupertino-based company never talked about such desires but the 41 pages of Apple application documents suggest their veiled self-driving effort. The document suggests that Apple Inc has rolled out a plan to train operators of self-driving cars. The paper submitted to this month to the California regulators shows a strong and clear message of the Tim Cook-led company’s entry to the race.

For the record, Alphabet’s Waymo is already ahead of a host of companies and start-ups as it has started testing on the road. But the speculation is that when Apple has taken up the task, it will definitely come up with something revolutionary.

California Department of Motor Vehicles permitted the iPhone maker to test self-driving cars on April 14, 2017, but the company kept everything under the wrap until the document went out.

The 10-page training plan by Apple outlined the feature called development platform. Also, it has highlighted scenarios of testing like difficult U-turn, high speed, lane change.

“Development platform will be controlled electronically (e.g. joystick) and safety drivers must be ready to intervene and take control,” the document reads.
It is also not clear whether the company aspires to come with a full vehicle or it will provide a self-driving platform to be imbibed in different cars.

Apple, for now, has not commented.
