A constitution bench will hear the pleas contesting the practice of ‘Triple Talaq’ and will give the final verdict on this issue to settle the issue “once and for all,” the Supreme Court said on Wednesday.
The constitution bench will be hearing a number of petitions contesting the practice of triple talaq from May 11 onwards. The bench is most likely to be a five-judge bench or it might be a larger bench that will be constituted on the orders of the Chief Justice of India, Justice JS Khehar.
“Whatever this question of triple talaq is, it will be settled for good,” the Supreme Court said.

The Supreme Court was hearing a petition by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) which had opposed the Government’s move against triple talaq and the introduction of Unform Civil Code in the country.
The AIMPLB, which has been maintaining that the issues relating to the practices of polygamy, triple talaq and nikah halala cannot be “re-written”,and they had told the court to reject the pleas against triple talaq, saying they are misconceived.
Last month, the Supreme Court had stated that a five-judge constitution bench would be set up to hear and decide on a batch of petitions relating to the practice of triple talaq, ‘nikah halala’ and polygamy among Muslims.
A bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar took on record three sets of issues framed by different parties with regard to the cases and had said the questions for consideration of the constitution bench would be decided on March 30.
On Wednesday, a three-month pregnant woman from Saharanpur wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath seeking the abolition of the practice.
Triple talaq is a Sharia law that gives a man the right to end the marriage by verbally saying ‘Talaq’ thrice to his wife – a practice contested by many women and activists in the country from a long time.
