‘Anurag Thakur committed perjury,’ says Supreme Court

Date:

In what could be a big blow for BCCI President Anurag Thakur, the Supreme Court on Thursday suggested that Thakur is guilty of committing perjury by filing false affidavit and reserved it’s order on the issue.

The Apex Court said:

“BCCI case-prima facia we believe a case of PERJURY is made out we will launch a prosecution. Apologise if you want to escape, but even then we are not sure if we could accept apology.”

The perjury case is due to the fact that the Lodha panel had informed the court that Thakur had written a letter to ICC chief executive Dave Richardson requesting for a letter from ICC, stating whether the appointment of a CAG official amounted to government interference in BCCI. but Anurag Thakur denied asking for such a letter by filing an affidavit in court.

The Supreme Court had on Wednesday deferred the hearing in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) versus Lodha case to Thursday.
The committee was keen that the bench headed by Chief Justice of India TS Thakur approves of former Union home secretary GK Pillai’s appointment as observer.

With the court closing for the winter holidays post Friday, it was expected that the SC will take a call on the proposals of the panel.

The panel had made it clear that while the day-to-day administration of the BCCI is presently carried out by the CEO and other managers, the top-brass needs to be removed and Pillai appointed observer in his place.

The BCCI had in its December 5 affidavit said that the panel hasn’t co-operated with the Board and refused to interact with Board officials. The BCCI also made it clear that the state associations have refused to accept the recommendations of the panel in toto. This despite the likes of Vidarbha, Tripura and Rajasthan implementing the proposals completely.
