A large heart-shaped nitrogen glacier was discovered on Pluto in 2015 by the New Horizons spacecraft. Now researchers are close to finding the reason for its presence.
“Pluto’s peculiar insolation and atmosphere favour nitrogen condensation near the equator, in the lower altitude regions, leading to an accumulation of ice at the bottom of Sputnik Planum, a vast topographic basin”, according to a new study published in the journal Nature .
Pluto is the best exploration place for Glaciologists. Nitrogen is most volatile at -235 degrees Celsius.
